Happy Birthday, Ana Pup!

Today is Ana’s second birthday!  I could never have predicted the joy, frustration, and chaos this sweet soul would bring into my life, but I wouldn’t change a thing!  Please help me celebrate my second soul dog with the photos below of our time together — so far!

I fell in love with this little sweetheart from the first photo I saw of her.  She was a little over 4 weeks old at the time.

A week and a half later, I flew to California, and we met for the first time.  Ana looked much cuter than I did.

I named her Ana, short for Ananda, which means unending joy.  I failed to consider what that might look like through the eyes of a puppy. A week after that, hubby and I drove back to Sacramento pick her up.   We had NO IDEA what we’d gotten ourselves into.

Her true personality emerged within a week.

Hence, her first Halloween costume.

She soon developed an obsession with sticks.

Which so far, she hasn’t outgrown.

Our first real challenge was figuring out how to contain her.  She could slip every harness, jump on the kitchen counters, and scale 5-foot fences by the time she was 5 months old.  We finally figured out a fence that could contain her.  You can’t see the cement moat we poured underneath it. Here she is, strategizing how to get out the day it was installed.  She was 6 months old at the time.

As she grew older, a vet finally figured out that her hyperactivity was due to food allergies, and I started the long process of rebuilding her health.  We still struggle, but there are many more good days than bad.

She finally grew in to those ridiculous ears.

And her teeth grew in to her.

She rejected her job as guard dog.

Making it clear that she was a lover instead.

Unless you’re a squirrel, that is.

Ana and I have become best friends.  We’re never far apart for long, but when we are, it is always a joyous reunion.

I can’t imagine my life without this girl, and frankly, I don’t want to. Here’s hoping we have at least another decade of birthdays to come!

Happy birthday, little sweetheart!  I adore you!

All healed! (Sort of.)

Question:  What do you get when 90-pound adolescent German shepherd decides to charge downhill and her five-foot-two-inch owner refuses to let go of the leash?

Answer?  This.

X-ray of Tracy’s collar bone the night of the great dog-walk disaster.

I basically flew like a kite behind her and landed on my shoulder.  Ouch.  Big time. The ER doc told me with 100% certainty that I would need surgery. Basically, I’d end up with lots of screws and a plate I couldn’t eat off of.

Fortunately, she was wrong.

I celebrated the three-month anniversary of the incident this past Thursday by getting repeat x-rays and meeting for the third time with the shoulder surgeon. The news was good.  Sort of.  The collar bone has completely healed.  I’m cleared to teach yoga, carry groceries, and hold Ana’s leash while trying to avoid a repeat performance.

Tracy’s broken collar bone: Another view

Three months later: All healed!

There’s only one problem: Now I have  a shoulder  issue.  Evidently wearing a sling for five weeks did a number on my shoulder joint capsule.  The surgeon was quite pleased that I’d avoided surgery, but he sent me back for six more weeks of physical therapy. I feel like Punxsutawney Phil forced into my cave  for six more weeks of winter.

The good news is, this will all likely clear up with time and some effort.  My 60 to 90 minutes of daily shoulder exercises  aren’t ending any time soon, but I AM seeing improvement. I have less pain and more movement every day. I’m back teaching yoga at Whole Life Yoga, though I use a body double for some demonstrations, and I’ve hired a cadre of people who can help me take care of Ana whenever I need it.

Best news of all?  My hubby now helps me cook Ana’s food!

Here’s hoping summer brings warmth, light and most of all, health!

Life, Change, and Embracing a New Career

Whole Life Yoga is Under New Leadership!

After over sixteen years in business, I recently sold the studio portion of Whole Life Yoga to the truly lovely Kim Tull-Esterbrook.  Kim has been my studio assistant and a teacher at Whole Life Yoga for years. She is also a graduate of my advanced yoga teacher training and a dear friend.  There is no one I trust to carry on my legacy more than Kim.

I still own Whole Life Yoga’s teacher training program.  In addition to leading yoga teacher training at the studio, I plan to expand my private yoga therapy practice and teach more specialized classes, starting with Yoga for Anxiety next week http://wholelifeyoga.com/anxiety.html.  And I will still maintain my weekly blog about yoga, dogs and writing.  In other words, I’m not going anywhere!

Many things will stay the same in this transition:

  • The studio will remain in the same location.
  • Your class passes will all be honored.
  • The studio will remain dedicated to Viniyoga.
  • You will still have the same great teachers.

And many things will get better:

  • The front room, web site, and newsletter will all get much-needed upgrades.
  • Fun new workshops and classes will be added.
  • There will be an enhanced emphasis on building community.

In short, this is fabulous news!  Please join me in supporting Kim and helping the studio thrive for the next sixteen years.

On a fun side note, I am pursuing certification to become an applied animal behaviorist.  I’ve wanted to work with animals my entire life, and I am delighted to finally have time to go after that dream.  If you need a dog trainer or a consultant for problem behaviors, keep me and my new dog training business, Peaceful Pups, in mind!

If you would like to stay in contact and hear about my yoga classes, animal behavior work, and writing, please e-mail me at Tracy@TracyWeber.net and I will add you to my personal mailing list.

A Note from Whole Life Yoga’s New Owner, Kim!

Dear Whole Life Yoga Community,

I am so excited and honored to be taking on this new role and helping to guide Whole Life into its future. This has been my yoga home for almost 10 years now and the teachings that have been passed down to me from Tracy, have transformed my life. I vow to continue to honor those teachings and the space that Whole Life provides for all of us to deepen our connection and dedication to those teachings.

There will be some surface changes – a freshening of the look, updating registration systems as planned, and some additional class offerings, geared towards deepening our sense of community. The yoga tools, however, remain the same! I hope that you will continue to bring the power of your presence to the studio!

I feel confident in taking this on because Tracy will still be here teaching, guiding and supporting me. I know many of you, but for those in the community I have not had the chance to meet, I hope that we can practice together soon! I value you, and this opportunity that has come into my life. I know that together we can keep this community strong and vibrant.

Namaste,

Tracy and Kim!

Book Signings and One-Armed Margaritas!

Hi everyone. I’m still living life one handed, but I wanted to share a couple of quick photos from my book signing at the Edmonds Bookshop on Saturday. This little jewel of a store has always been good to me, so even though I didn’t do signings anywhere else this year, I couldn’t skip them. If you haven’t ever gone into the store, please do. Local bookstores need all of our help to continue surviving and hopefully thriving.

I’ll never get used to the thrill of seeing my name on a chalkboard outside of a bookstore.

This is me chatting with members of my audience before I started reading. I travel with a host of pillows these days. The pink pillow in the photo supports my elbow.

By the time I started reading, the chairs were filled, and people were standing in the back. We sold all but one copy of my newest, Pre-Meditated Murder, and sold out of much of my backstock. Many of the people in the audience came as a result of the article in the Seattle Times.

No reading would be complete without a post-celebratory margarita. Thanks to friends Rene, Sheryl, and Anna, who joined me for a few snacks. The handsome man in the photo next to me is my husband Marc.

Thanks everyone who supports me in every way. Please continue to send bone-knitting energy. I’ve still got eight days before I can have a repeat x-ray, and it is likely I’ll be in the sling for awhile after that. But every day that passes is a day closer to when all of this will be behind me.

Tracy

Dedications, Gratitude, and Appreciation, Oh My!

The Monday after Thanksgiving seems appropriate to share my intense gratitude for all of the people who have helped me on the path to publication for my newest book, Pre-Meditated Murder.  Even though it’s not out until January, the individuals mentioned below helped me over a year ago, meaning that this thanks is well overdue.  To all of the people who help me every day of this life, I probably don’t say it enough, but I appreciate you!!

Dedication:

To my precocious German shepherd pup, Ana. Thank you for filling my days with laughter and my nights with warmth.

Acknowledgements:

The longer I write, the more I realize that writing is a team sport.

Thanks, as always, to editor Sandy Sullivan at Midnight Ink and freelance editor Marta Tanrikulu. Your insights and feedback both amaze and humble me. Thanks also to my agent, Margaret Bail, and editor Terri Bischoff at Midnight Ink. I am grateful that you were willing to take a chance on this newbie author five years ago.  Without you, my series would still be gathering dust at the bottom of my closet.

Special thanks to Jane Gorman, Brandy Reinke, and Renee Turner, who helped me understand the complex process of immigration and the particular challenges faced by immigrants coming to the United States from Mexico. Any errors are solely my own.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the town of Cannon Beach, Oregon, which is one of my favorite places in the world. I took some liberties with the Sand Castle Festival, including moving it to autumn instead of early summer, but the loveliness of the town is unchanged. I hope to retire there someday.

My husband, Marc, gets extra kudos for designing and maintaining my author website, as well as for listening to all of my grumbles and supporting me through all of my challenges. Ana Pup, the new canine love of my life, gets my eternal gratitude for keeping life interesting.

Finally, thank you to all of my readers, who keep me glued to the keyboard even when I feel like giving up. I write for you.

Finding Gratitude

The holidays are almost upon us, and with them come more activities than most of us know how to handle. I’m no exception. Therefore today’s blog post will be short and sweet.  Here are ten things I’m grateful for this Thanksgiving, in no particular order:

  1. My husband, Marc, who is my best friend, my confidante, and the love of my life. I don’t know what I’d do without him.
  2. My crazy pup, Ana, who fills my life with mischief and keeps me challenged every day.
  3. The wonderful students who’ve taught me so much over my past 17 years as a yoga teacher, particularly those in my yoga teacher training programs.
  4. My readers! I never thought I’d write a single book, much less be working on my 6th. Without the readers who’ve contacted me, I never could have kept going.
  5. My body, challenged though it may be. They say some of the best healers are injured, and I’m no exception. I sometimes angst over my body and wonder what I could have accomplished had I been healthier, but every ache and injury has taught me a valuable lesson that I can use to help others.
  6. Microsoft. I left the company in 2000, but without it I never would have had the financial ability to open Whole Life Yoga.
  7. My friends, who stick with me through hard times, remind me to enjoy simple pleasures like bingeing on popcorn while watching The Walking Dead, and drag me out of my cocoon when I’m feeling isolated.
  8. Champagne and dark chocolate. (OK, that’s two, but they go SO GOOD together!)
  9. Grey’s Anatomy. Fine, I admit it.
  10. Those of you reading this blog. I feel blessed to be able to spill my soul on paper and have people who are gracious enough to read it. May you all have rich, joyous, love-filled holidays!

What are you grateful for?

Happy Double-Five Birthday to Hubby, Marc Martin!

Put your hands together and cheer for the wonderful man who had the poor judgment to marry me over twenty years ago.  Yesterday was his fifty-fifth birthday!  Those of you who know my better half realize how totally lost I’d be without him.  Not only is he my best friend and the love of my life, but he helps with both my yoga studio and my writing efforts while still providing most of the income for our family from his forty-hour-a-week job.

On top of that, he has enough of a sense of humor to have agreed to buy me this magnet for my car:

Is that the perfect man for me, or what?

Honey, I don’t tell you often enough, but I love you.  I hope I’ll be next to you, driving you crazy for the next fifty five years of you life.

Visiting the Scene of the Crime

Happy Labor Day, everyone!  As promised last week, below are some photos of Marc, Ana’s and my recent trip to Cannon Beach, Oregon.  The trip was doubly special because we both got to see the full eclipse and spend some time at the location of my upcoming mystery, Pre-Meditated Murder!

We got into town early enough to settle in to our tiny beach house and do an early romp on the beach.

Ana inaugurated the beach with her first paw print.

Then we rested up to leave at six the next morning to drive to the path of totality.  Ana practiced wearing her eclipse glasses.

But seemed relatively unimpressed.  (Do you see the mini-eclipses in her fur?)

Still, totality was pretty amazing, at least for us humans.

We made it up to Ana by taking her to the beach and letting her run.

Day…

And night.

She was a very happy girl.

The humans saw starfish.

And got a little exercise themselves.

We even visited our favorite sailor statue.

Man how Ana has grown!  (This photo was taken ten months ago.)

Alas, it was finally time to say goodbye.

But we had a fabulous surprise shortly after we returned home!

We’re already planning our next trip to this very special place.  In the meantime, I’ll share it with you this January in Pre-Meditated Murder!

Hope you all had a wonderful summer filled with love, laughter, and vacation adventures.

The Fourteenth Year: A Celebration

Last Monday marked the graduation of my 14th yoga teacher training.  Here are some photos of our last night together.

We gathered in a circle to share what the past ten months have taught us.

Then we cemented our intentions for the future.

My students surprised me with a wonderful gift—a gift certificate for a portrait of the Ana Pup!

We ate lots of yummy food.

The chocolate and baklava groups were well represented.

We shared some fun stories.

And took a selfie or two.

The evening wasn’t complete until the final group pictures. Some serious …

And some not so serious.

And then it was time for some hugs goodbye.

Leftover dessert, anyone?

As always, I loved this year’s teacher training group. I will miss them.  And I will always feel blessed to have been gifted with their presence in my life.

Namaste

Love Can Change a World

I’m still recovering from a car accident a month ago, so I need to significantly limit my time at the computer. This blog article is too important to postpone writing, however.

I need your help.

We all get requests for our attention, support, and financial donations regularly.  I — like most of you — do as much as I can, as often as I can. Now is one of those times.

Claire Ricci is a graduate of my yoga teacher training, a former employee, and a friend.  She and her husband Chris have weathered — and thrived — in conditions that would destroy most of us. Many years ago, Chris survived a violent attack that left him with a traumatic brain injury. Two years ago, he fought — and won! — a battle against throat cancer.  A few months after achieving remission, he had a stroke. The road they’ve traveled since then has been long, littered with obstacles, and often lonely.

Through it all, Claire has been his advocate, his cheerleader, his caretaker, his love. Chris has spent the last two years in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities several hours away from their home.  Claire has stayed by his side through it all, and the costs have taken a toll on their savings.  Enough of a toll that they are in danger of losing their home, which would mean giving up their beloved dog, Rocket.

Recently, Claire gave a few of her friends permission to share their story.  We’ve raised enough money to keep their home safe through the end of the year, and Chris has simultaneously made some remarkable strides that make it very possible that he will return there.  Once that happens, he will need specialized support, including expensive wheelchairs, visiting nurses, and other rehabilitative services as he continues healing.

Can you help?

If possible, please read, share, and consider donating to the GoFundMe campaign at this link.  There have never been two people more worthy.

As a thank you, anyone who donates $10 or more and lets me know by either commenting on this blog or e-mailing me at Tracy@WholeLifeYoga.com will receive their choice of an autographed copy of my 4th Downward Dog Mystery, A Fatal Twist, or 10% off their next class pass or series class at Whole Life Yoga.

Thank you!

Tracy Weber
